Japan Holidays


National holidays are simply called holidays. According to the National Holidays Law (part 3 article 1), National holidays are not working days.
National Holidays Law (part 3 article 1): In order to satisfy wish for freedom and peace of Japanese people, to raise beautiful traditions, create harmonius society and comprehensive life, the following days are proclaimed to be holidays as greating, thanks and memory for Japanese people.
 

 

January 1st-New Year`s Day


Established in 1948.
It is a day to celebrate the new year. Before 1948 it was a national holiday on which the imperial worship ceremony took place.
 

 

Second Monday of January- Coming od Age Day


Established in 1948, date changed in 2000.

Before 2000 it was held on January 15th .
Its origin comes from Koshogatsu holiday. It is a day for young people to realise that they are grown up already, congratulation and encouragement for people who have reached the age of 20 years old during the year. It was celebrated on Janury 15th before, but then the date was changed due to Happy Monday System.

 

 

February 11th-National Foundation Day


Established in 1967
Before World War II it was known as Kigen-setsu.
 

 

March 21st-Vernal Equinox Day


Etablished in 1948.
It is a day for the admiration of nature and the love of living things. It is the day of equinox. Before World War II it was known as Shunki korei-sai.
 

 

April 29th-Showa Day


Established in 2007.

In the period of 1989-2006 it was celebrated as a holiday called gGreenery Dayh

It was established in 1988 in order to honour Showa Emperor`s birthday.
gBrutal time has passed, at Showa period restoration started, the country has hope againh. In 2005 the name gShowa Dayh was approved. Before was celebrated as Emperor`s birthday.

1989-2006:gGreenery Dayh, before 1988: Emperor`s birthday.
 

 

May 3rd-Constitution Memorial Day


Established in 1948.
It is the holiday to commemorate the day on which Japan's new constitution came to force.
 

 

May 4th Greenery Day


Established in 2007.
Before 2006 was celebrated on April 29th. It is a day to make cheerfull thanks to nature for its kindness.
 

 

May 5th-Children's Day


It was established in 1948.
The Boy`s Day celebration seasonal festival. It is the day to esteem the personality of children and plan their happiness.
 

 

The third Monday of July-Marine Day


Established in 2003

Before 2002 was celebrated on 20th of July. According to Happy Monday System, the day of celebration was settled as third Monday of July.
Originally established in 1996, the day of celebration 20th of July.
In 2002 settled as third Monday of July
It is a day of thanking to the sea for its kindness and pray of Japan as a sea country for prosperity. Sometimes called a day of sea memorizing.

 

 

The third Monday of September-Respect to the Aged Day


Established in 2003
Before 2002 was celebrated on 15th of September. According to Happy Monday System, the day of celebration was settled as third Monday of September.

From 1966 to 2002 was celebrated on 15th of September
Itfs a day of respect to elderly people and wish them long life.
 

 

September 23rd-Autumnal Equinox Day


Established in 1948
It is a day to honor one's ancestors and remember the dead. Before 1948 is was celebrated as Sh?ki k?rei-sai.

 

 

The second Monday of October-Health and Sports Day


Established in 2000.

Before 1999 it was celebrated on 10th of October. According to Happy Monday System, the day of celebration was settled as third Monday of September. Its slogan is enjoy sports and cultivate healthy way of life. It was originally held on 10th of October to memorize the anniversary of Tokyo Olympic Games.

Since 1966 to 1999 was held on 10th of October.
 

 

November 3rd-Culture Day


Established in 1948
Its slogan is: loving freedom and peace, promote culture.
 

 

November 23rd-Labour Thanksgiving Day


Established in 1948.
It was established to for praising labor, celebrating production and giving thanks to each other. Before World War II the same day was celebrated Niiname-sai Imperial harvest festival.
 

 

December 23rd-The Emperor`s birthday


Established in 1989.
Established to celebrate the birthday of reigning Emperor. Celebrated since 1989, before 1989 was celebrated on April 29th as birthday of Showa Emperor.
 

 

Transfer Holidays


The system of transfer holidays was established in 1973.
If a national holiday falls on Sunday, it will be trasferred to the next day. It was firstly used on 30th April 1973. In 2007 some changes were made. If a national holiday will fall on Sunday, the next week-day will be day off.
 

 

Citizen`s Holidays


Established in 1988
Sometimes a weekday falls between national holidays, in that case it becomes day-off. the example is the 4th of May (before 2006). After reform of 2003, the same situation may occur for Respect to the Aged Day and Autumnal Equinox Day, it happened on 22nd of September 2009. After reform of 2007 such situation can not be applied to the 4th of May.

 

–According to the Happy Monday system in order to increse the quantity of consecutive holidays, the dates for celebration of Coming of Age Day and Health and Sports Day were indicated as the second Monday of January and October. The decision was takes on 21st of October 1998 and came to force from the 1st of January 2000.
